What problems does it solve on set?
Real apps expose private data, require network access and change independently of the production. Pre-rendered videos are predictable but cannot adapt when dialogue, timing or values change.
Prop software gives the crew a repeatable scene that can be adjusted without rebuilding the entire asset.
What features matter?
Useful features include fast editing, reliable reset, offline or local operation, saved projects and clear device support. The interface should remain legible under the camera, not just on a design monitor.
- Editable names, values and images
- Predictable taps and transitions
- Quick reset between takes
- No need to expose real accounts
Interactive prop or screen replacement?
An interactive prop is shown directly on the photographed device. Screen replacement records or composites the interface later. Both approaches can use the same fictional design, but they have different tracking, reflection and timing requirements.
Productions often choose per shot rather than committing to one method for every scene.
The software is part of the prop department
Prop interface software is valuable when the screen must behave like a controllable object in the production—not just a picture added afterward.
