Everything Online Is Becoming More Fictional

AI, editing, curation, personas, and synthetic media are making online reality harder to separate from performance.

The internet has always been edited.

People picked flattering photos. Deleted posts that flopped. Exaggerated stories. Cropped screenshots. Pretended they were having more fun than they were.

None of that is new.

What feels different now is the amount of reality that can be manufactured before anything even gets posted.

The apartment can be fake.

The face can be altered.

The voice can be generated.

The screenshot can be assembled.

The person writing the caption might not exist.

The “candid” photo can be a scene that never happened.

Then all of it gets dropped into a feed beside actual photos, actual people, actual screenshots, actual events, with basically the same dimensions.

We used to ask if something online was edited.

Now that question feels too small.

The better question is probably: what part of this was ever real?

And weirdly, I do not think this automatically ruins the internet.

Some of the best things online have always been fictional. Characters, memes, games, anonymous accounts, running jokes, roleplay, fake companies, alternate-reality projects. People like worlds.

The problem starts when fictional presentation borrows the credibility of documentary evidence.

A fake movie poster is obvious play.

A fake bank balance used as proof is something else.

The border matters even if the tools stop making it obvious.

I think people are going to get much better at reading vibes around this stuff, mostly because they have to.

Not “is this image fake?”

More like:

What is this account trying to make me believe?

Why does it need me to believe it?

That is probably the useful skill now.

The pixels are getting less helpful.
