ORGANIC THOUGHT DUMPS

Most Personal Brands Are Boring

Personal branding often removes the exact odd details that made a person interesting enough to follow in the first place.

The funniest thing about personal branding is how often the process removes the person.

Somebody starts posting because they're obsessed with something.

Their posts are messy. Half the references make no sense. They have opinions they haven't turned into "content" yet. They post a photo of the wrong thing at 1:12 AM. You can tell what websites they spend too much time on.

Then the personal-brand machinery arrives.

New headshot.

Three content pillars.

Consistent typography.

A bio that says what they help people do.

Every post gets a hook.

Every story has a lesson.

Every opinion mysteriously leads back to the product.

Now the person is easier to understand and much harder to care about.

I get why this happens. Consistency works. Clear positioning works. If your profile is attached to a business, some basic explanation is useful.

But there is a point where "professional" becomes a solvent.

It melts all the weird edges off.

The strange hobby disappears because it is off-topic. The dumb joke disappears because it might confuse prospects. The unfinished thought becomes a seven-slide carousel. A normal bad day becomes a tasteful post about resilience.

Eventually you're looking at a human-shaped company page.

The accounts I remember usually kept something they probably would have been told to remove.

An ugly recurring screenshot format. A completely unrelated obsession. A phrase they use too much. A weird posting schedule. An opinion that doesn't fit their audience profile. A dumb running joke that has survived for two years.

Those things are inefficient.

They're also identity.

There is probably a version of personal branding that is just editing yourself enough to be legible without editing yourself into the same guy who appears 40 times in your LinkedIn feed.

Most people seem to blow straight past that line.
