You Do Not Need Permission to Create a New Identity

The internet has always allowed people to choose new names, aesthetics and identities. You do not need a committee to approve the version of you that exists online.

One of the strangest things real-name social media did was convince people that every online identity needed to be a direct extension of their offline one.

Same name. Same face. Same job. Same friends. Same acceptable opinions.

Like the internet is supposed to be a government form.

It was not always like this.

You could show up somewhere with a stupid username, a pixel avatar and absolutely no explanation of who you were in real life. That was the point. The account existed because you made it.

I think people still feel like they need permission to do that now.

They want a reason to start a pseudonym.

A business reason. A privacy reason. A content strategy. A niche. Some kind of neat explanation they can give if somebody asks why they suddenly have an anonymous account called something ridiculous.

You do not really need one.

You are allowed to make something because you want a different room to exist in.

Maybe your normal account has family, old coworkers and people from high school watching everything. Maybe you want to write without your name attached. Maybe you want to try a different visual style. Maybe you want to talk about one specific corner of the internet without turning your actual identity into a content vertical.

That does not automatically mean you are hiding something sinister.

People change clothes depending on where they are going. They talk differently with different groups. They already have multiple versions of themselves offline.

The internet just makes those versions visible.

Obviously, creating a new identity is not a free pass to impersonate somebody, fake credentials or invent material facts to take people's money. That is a different thing.

I am talking about choosing the frame.

A new name. A new PFP. A new tone. A new little corner of the internet where the old context does not follow you around like a fucking ankle monitor.

You can just do that.

Nobody needs to approve the username.
