Sometimes the Account Is More Real Than the Person

An internet persona can start as a performance and eventually become the place where someone expresses the most consistent version of themselves.

Sometimes a fake internet name ends up being the most honest version of somebody.

That sounds like fake-deep bullshit, but I keep seeing it.

A person creates an anonymous account because they do not want coworkers, family, old classmates or random people from real life watching them.

At first it is a character.

Different username. Different picture. Maybe a slightly exaggerated tone.

Then they use it for three years.

They write thousands of posts. Make friends. Argue with people. Change opinions. Build stupid inside jokes. Talk about things they would never attach to their legal name.

Eventually the account has more behavioural history than the person’s “real” public identity does.

Your normal social profile might be twelve safe photos, a job title and a birthday post from your aunt.

Meanwhile the anonymous account contains every obsession you have had since 2023.

Which one is more real?

I do not think the answer is automatically the anonymous one. People lie online. They roleplay. They exaggerate. Some accounts are completely fabricated.

But real life is also full of performance.

You talk differently around your grandmother than you do in a group chat. You behave differently at work than you do at 1:30 AM with people you have known since high school.

Nobody calls that fraud.

It is context.

The interesting part is when an internet persona stops feeling like something you put on and starts feeling like a place you take something off.

No real name.

No existing expectations.

No need to explain how this new interest fits with the version of you everybody already knows.

You just post.

After enough time, the distinction between character and person gets messy.

Maybe the account started as a costume.

Maybe you accidentally built a room where you were more yourself.
